    Hair Structure and Biology
   

Hair is a keratinic stem at the scalp level. Its aesthetic importance
is combined with a role of scalp protection against various stresses
(physical, mechanical, chemical).

 
  Hair follicle and its auxilliary parts.
A - germinative bulb and median papilla.
B - hair stem and its 3 layers.
In the anagen phase, there are plenty of GAG
within the intercellular spaces of the matrix
cells and in the bulbar dermal papilla.
   

1. The hair stem visible part, with 3 layers of cell:
     • Central marrow, with not very dense anucleate cells,
     • Cortex, a bulky median area with cells producing melanin
       (hair pigmentation)
     • outer cuticle with depigmented flattened cells arranged in scales like
        tiles on a roof.

2. The root : set indirectly into scalp is enclosed within the hair follicle. At its
lower end, the bulb shows a stong metabolic activity, the centre of hair growth. the bulb is made of cellular heaps being identical with epidermal
layers. At the bottom : median invagination designed for receiving the
papilla. Being highly vascularized, it contains matricial cells with a quick
multiplication.

    Hair Cycle
 
    Hair grows from the root and has a periodis cyclis activity in 3
phases : anagen, active phase of growth (3 to 6 years) ; catagen regression
phase ( 3 weeks or so, )telogen (3months) : the dead hair is pushed out by
a new anagen hair. Anagen hair resembles 85% of hair . Between 50 and
100 hairs usually fall everyday. 25 hair cycles occur in a lifetime
    Androgenetic alopecia

  Abnormal hair loss process concerning men and women and

Stimulation of oxygen consumption

    Clinical Study
    Anti-hair loss activity and improvement to the aesthetic
qualities of hair
   

Aim
Demonstration of the anti-hair loss activity and the improvement of
Vitagen® treatment.

Protocol
The study has been carried out on 40 male volunteers having an androgenetic
alopecia (type I to lll) and (after trichogram of preselection) an average A/T
ratio lower than 4 on three areas of the scalp. All the volunteers were in
a phase of hair loss. Treatment every two nights, on the scalp and clean, dry
hair, during 16 weeks. Evaluation of the efficacy of the treatment after 8 and
16 weeks of treatment (D56 and D112)

Interview and examination of the volunteers by a dermatologist :
- importance of hair loss in 3 usual situations : during combing, shampooing,
and on the pillow,
- hair qualities,
- scalp condition

• Evaluation by trichogram
A trichogram was made on three areas on the scalp (frontal,parietal and
occipital) : standardised sampling of about 20 to 30 hairs for counting the
ratio of anagen hair (A) and telogen ones (T), calculation of the A/T ratio.

Evaluation by Trichogram

   

The treatment with the lotion has:

-significantly decreased hair loss; on average, on the 3 tested areas of the scalp, the A/T ratio has increased by more than 100% and has moved from 3.47 (Alopecia) up 7.4 (Normalisation),

-revitalised hair in the parietal area by strengthening significantly the A/T ratio within the area where the loss usually is gentler,

-gradually reversed the dramatic process of hair loss within the frontal area; there, the A/T ratio has increased by more than 100%

-decreased and significantly reversed the hair loss process within the occipital area; most important results.
