    Hair Structure and Biology

Hair is a keratinic stem at the scalp level. Its aesthetic importance
is combined with a role of scalp protection against various stresses
(physical, mechanical, chemical).

Hair follicle and its auxilliary parts.
A - germinative bulb and median papilla.
B - hair stem and its 3 layers.
In the anagen phase, there are plenty of GAG
within the intercellular spaces of the matrix
cells and in the bulbar dermal papilla.

1. The hair stem visible part, with 3 layers of cell:
     • Central marrow, with not very dense anucleate cells,
     • Cortex, a bulky median area with cells producing melanin
       (hair pigmentation)
     • outer cuticle with depigmented flattened cells arranged in scales like
        tiles on a roof.

2. The root : set indirectly into scalp is enclosed within the hair follicle. At its
lower end, the bulb shows a stong metabolic activity, the centre of hair growth. the bulb is made of cellular heaps being identical with epidermal
layers. At the bottom : median invagination designed for receiving the
papilla. Being highly vascularized, it contains matricial cells with a quick

    Hair Cycle
Hair grows from the root and has a periodis cyclis activity in 3
phases : anagen, active phase of growth (3 to 6 years) ; catagen regression
phase ( 3 weeks or so, )telogen (3months) : the dead hair is pushed out by
a new anagen hair. Anagen hair resembles 85% of hair . Between 50 and
100 hairs usually fall everyday. 25 hair cycles occur in a lifetime
    Androgenetic alopecia

CSS Based Menus Css3Menu.com

Abnormal hair loss process concerning men and women and
causing a loss of hair at the top of the scalp. Two inner factors are signifi
can : some receptivity to male hormones of hair roots, and a genetic tendency
of hair to undergo this stimulation : hair becomes thinner and thinner,
finally falls out.
Nutritional factors : deficiencies in proteins,
sulfur arnino acids, vitamins and some
psychi factors (psychological shocks)
maycontribute to hair loss. Seborrhea is
often linked to androgenetic alopecia.
Androgenetic alopecias can be classified
(evolution degree) according to Hamilton,
on men and according to Ludwig, on women.

Vitagen is a unique bio-engineered trichogenic complex of selected components of botanical, phyto-tech-nological and synthetic origin specifically
formulated for the preventative treatment of hair loss due to androgenetic
alopecia. Vitagen encourages stimulation of metabolism, improvement
of cellular oxygen levels and epidermal microcirculation with enhanced cell
promotion. Cosmetically substantive enhancement of the dermal collagen
matrix with improved aesthetic and sensorial hair qualities.

Hair Benefits
1. Decrease of hair loss and stimulation of hair growth : stimulation
of metabolism, improvement of cellular oxygenation and skin

2. Improvement of aesthetic and sensorial hair qualities. Decrease
of oily look, stem conditioning; improvement of the dry, dull look, of
suppleness and easier combing.

3. Improvement of the dandruff and seborrheic states of the scalp.
Healthier condition, decrease of itching, balance of secretion.
    Main components

1.Sulfopeptides of soy (Glycine max) (MW ˜ 15,000 Da) Regulators of cell
nutrition and growth, supply of bio-available sulfur, stimulation of protein

2. Amino-acids derivatives of tyrosine, arginine, ornithine, citrulline :
precursors of proteins and melanin pigments.

3. Aminosaccharide : glucosamine. GAG precursor for strengthening the
extracellular papillary / peribulbar matrix.

4. Vitamins of B group (PP,B5 and Biotin) and Zinc salt take part in the
regulation of cellular nutrition and fight against any deficiency in B vitamins
and oligo - elements.

5. Panox ginseng and Arctium majus extracts : toning
( local nicorcirculation) and antimicrobia effects

    Clinical Study
Anti-hair loss activity and improvement to the aesthetic
qualities of hair

Demonstration of the anti-hair loss activity and the improvement of
Vitagen® treatment.

The study has been carried out on 40 male volunteers having an androgenetic
alopecia (type I to lll) and (after trichogram of preselection) an average A/T
ratio lower than 4 on three areas of the scalp. All the volunteers were in
a phase of hair loss. Treatment every two nights, on the scalp and clean, dry
hair, during 16 weeks. Evaluation of the efficacy of the treatment after 8 and
16 weeks of treatment (D56 and D112)

    Experimental protocol.
40 male subjects with
androgenetic alopecia
(I to III) A/T ratio‹4
  • Sensorial evaluation
After 8 and 16 weeks of treatment, appraisal by volunteers :
- of the intensity of hair loss in
3 usual situations
- of the efficacy of the lotion on the aesthetic
qualities of hair and scalp, with a
questionnaire of sensorial evaluation
Treatment every two days
hair lotion Vitagen
    Clinical Evaluation

Interview and examination of the volunteers by a dermatologist :
- importance of hair loss in 3 usual situations : during combing, shampooing,
and on the pillow,
- hair qualities,
- scalp condition
- hair regrowth.

• Evaluation by trichogram
A trichogram was made on three areas on the scalp (frontal, parietal and
occipital) : standardised sampling of about 20 to 30 hairs for counting the
ratio of anagen hair (A) and telogen ones (T), calculation of the A/T ratio.

Presentation of anagen
and telogen bulbs obtained
on a trichogram of the alopecic volunteer.
Telogen hair is prevailing.
  • Evaluation by phototrichogram
A treatment for 4 months wish Vitagen gave
the following results :

• Sensorial evaluation
Volunteers have observed :
- an improvement of the aesthetic qualities of
the scalp/hair,
- a decrease of hair loss,
- an increase in the speed of hair growth.

Photo Trichogram

Visualisation by phototichogram, of the regrowth effect on 1 subject after
4 months of treatment of a hair lotion Vitagen. (Laboratoire Serobiologique S.A. Photographs) 3A-visualisation of a scalp area before treatment. 3B-same
area after 4 months of treatment: new hair comes out compared to before treatment each one in anagen phase.

Qualitative Evaluation

Semi-quantitative evaluation by volunteers of the intensity of hair loss, after 2 and 4 months of treatment with Vitagen®

Sensorial appraisal (40 volunteers) of the efficacy of Vitagen, after 2 and 4 months of treatment: aesthetic qualities of hair and scalp, anti-loss activity.

Clinical Evaluation

Clinical Evaluation
The dermatologist has observed:
- decrease of hair loss
- an improvement of the aesthetic qualities of hair, along with the scalp condition,
- a regrowth effect among 36% of the volunteers, after 4 months of treatment.

Evaluation of the aesthetic qualities of hair and
scalp by the dermatologist. Results of the
treatment with Vitagen

Evaluation by Trichogram

The treatment with the lotion has:

-significantly decreased hair loss; on average, on the 3 tested areas of the scalp, the A/T ratio has increased by more than 100% and has moved from 3.47 (Alopecia) up 7.4 (Normalisation),

-revitalised hair in the parietal area by strengthening significantly the A/T ratio within the area where the loss usually is gentler,

-gradually reversed the dramatic process of hair loss within the frontal area; there, the A/T ratio has increased by more than 100%

-decreased and significantly reversed the hair loss process within the occipital area; most important results.

Evolution of the A/T ratio obtained by trichogram on 3 areas of the scalp
before (D0) then after 2 months (D56) and 4 months of treatment (D112) 5,
with Vitagen.
